New Group Formed to Urge “No” Vote on Brighton Proposal Allowing Unlimited Marijuana Dispensaries

Updated: Sep 16, 2022

September 16, 2022 - Brighton, MI – A new organization, Protect Brighton Youth & Community, has been launched as a Michigan Local Ballot Question Committee, for the following purposes:

  • To educate voters on the upcoming City of Brighton ballot proposal, which would allow an unlimited number of recreational marijuana dispensaries within city limits, if it is supported by a majority of Brighton voters.

  • To inform voters of the negative impact of increased access of high-THC marijuana products on Brighton’s youth and community.

  • To urge voters to vote “No” on this proposition in the November 8, 2022 election.

Protect Brighton Youth & Community was formed in response to a ballot proposal coordinated by a group of out-of-town marijuana professionals, to allow commercial marijuana businesses in Brighton. This initiative is fundamentally opposed to Brighton’s family-friendly small-town character and would increase youth access to dangerous high-THC marijuana products. Our grassroots locally-based group is committed to defending our city from these outside interests and maintaining the values that have made Brighton a place where “Quality is a Way of Life”.

If approved, this ballot proposal would establish a new city ordinance allowing marijuana dispensaries within the City of Brighton, and featuring:

  • An unlimited number of shops

  • No buffer zones to Main Street, downtown, playgrounds, or parks of one acre or less.

  • No buffer zones to daycares, churches, or other youth facilities.

  • Small 800 ft buffer zones to K-12 schools.

  • Walk-up and drive-up windows.

  • Potential 24/7 operations.

This risky proposal will increase youth access to harmful marijuana products with uncapped THC potency, cause a dramatic increase in traffic, and will cost the city far more than any perceived economic benefits. Based on this, Protect Brighton Youth & Community strongly objects to this extreme proposal, and urges Brighton voters to vote No on November 8.

@silaso3775

looks like someone with a lot of time and the general misconception of the benefits of THC for those with chronic pain.

adults should never let children have THC just like kids shouldn’t drink alcohol. I hope those that are behind this push will give marijuana a proper try and realize how many actual medical benefits THC ingestion provides. good luck to both sides!

Claims that the proposal was from "out-of-town" interests, but refuses to provide any information on who is funding this opposition. Curious.
